Massage Treatment To Help People With Restless Leg Syndrome

Most people, without even realizing it, are already experiencing Restless Leg Syndrome or RLS. Restless Leg Syndrome is a medical condition characterized by an irresistible urge to move the legs as a person goes to a sitting or lying position.

One out of ten people worldwide is said to be having this condition. If you think that you are one of those people experiencing Restless Leg Syndrome (even with the sole basis of having the desire to move your legs when in a relaxed position), then it is about time that you arm yourself with knowledge about RLS. Restless Leg Syndrome is a recognized neurological disorder so do not make the mistake of dismissing it simply as a sign of fatigue.

Symptoms

Though people with RLS in Lakeland find it hard to describe what they feel, most people with this condition use the words "tingling", "aching", and "itching". These usually occur when people are lying in bed trying to sleep at night.

Most people report an inexplicably uncomfortable sensation in the legs just as their minds are drifting off to sleep. This uncomfortable sensation translates to an overwhelming urge to move and twitch the legs.

Some people in Lakeland reportedly stretch their hamstrings or massage their legs to get rid of the feeling.

Causes

RLS is believed by many experts to be caused by dopamine imbalance. Dopamine is a chemical that transmits signals between synapse in the brain. This condition is also believed to be genetic. Studies reveal that 6 out of 10 people with RLS have family members with the same condition. This proves to be true in Lakeland.

Studies further reveal that RLS is found to be more common in women. About 40% of expecting mothers experience Restless Leg Syndrome sometime during their pregnancy.

Other possible causes of RLS include diabetes, arthritis, iron deficiency, and kidney failure.

Treatments

There are prescription medicines that are available for RLS. However, most doctors also advise lifestyle change and massage treatments. A massage aimed at the calf muscles can help relieve restless legs according to the American Massage Therapy Association.

A special type of massage treatment is applied for soon to be mothers. Called pregnancy massage or pre-natal massage, this type of massage is specially designed to suit the delicate conditions of expecting mothers. Almost half of those who received pregnancy massage claimed to achieve positive results. In addition, not only is pregnancy massage very helpful for restless legs and swollen feet, it aids in the preparation of the pelvic region for the actual birthing process too.

This simple self massage tips can also help people with RLS:

  • Place the palm of the left hand to the largest part of the right calf. Fingers should be pointed towards the heel.

  • Grab the muscle firmly with the left hand and pull it away from the leg as far as possible.

  • Gently squeeze the muscle several times before letting it go.

  • Repeat the process for five minutes before switching to the other leg for another five minutes.
